As of yesterday, Cavanaugh’s Rittenhouse will be accepting the popular new digital currency, Bitcoin. To use the currency owners will need to have a Coinbase account, which is available in the Google Play Android app store. Customers will eat and drink as usual but when it’s time to pay the bill, instead of pulling out their credit card or cash they login to their Coinbase account and transfer the appropriate amount of bitcoin to the Cavanaugh’s account.

Bitcoin is a digital currency that isn’t currently controlled by any central government. While it started out as way for the digital underworld to pay for illegal products and services is quickly gained notoriety when juggernauts like OKcupid.com and Overstock.com started accepting the currency. The quick rise in popularity has driven the price up at an exponential rate. On October, 1st 2013 one bitcoin was worth $127. Today (1.22.14) one bitcoin is worth $817. With some of the largest companies in the US like Amazon.com looking to accept bitcoin, it’s possible that it will be the new standard for international currency.
